Hilltoppers Still No. 3 in NABC Coaches' Poll

Posted: Updated:

The West Liberty University men's basketball team remained locked in at the No. 3 spot in this

week's NCAA Division II Top 25 poll conducted by the National Association of Basketball Coaches' (NABC) Division II rankings panel.
Coach Jim Crutchfield's Hilltoppers swept all three of their games in convincing fashion last week, blasting Bluefield State, 111-72, on Monday before hammering West Virginia State, 113-74 on Thursday and closing out the week with a 74-62 win against Seton Hill. This week's poll includes results from games played through Sunday, Feb. 3.
The nation's only two unbeaten teams, No. 1 Metro State (19-0) and No. 2 Western Washington (20-0), held onto their spots, as well, this week but the rest of the Top 10 received a pretty good shuffle.
Cal Poly-Pomona (17-1) moved up a spot to No. 4 with Minnesota State (18-2) jumping up a pair of places to No. 5.
Seattle Pacific (16-3) dropped from No. 4 to No. 6 after a tough overtime loss at No. 2 Western Washington while Indiana, Pa. (17-2) and Florida Southern (16-2) each moved up a spot to No. 7 and No. 8, respectively. Alabama-Huntsville (16-3) is up to No. 9 while Southern Indiana (16-3) broke into the Top 10 with a 62-49 thumping of Bellarmine, Ky. (16-3), which dropped from No. 6 to No. 11 with the loss.
West Liberty, which improved to 21-1 on Monday night with a 112-55 rout of Ohio Valley, has now appeared in 48 consecutive NABC Top 25 polls dating back to December 2009. That's the longest run in the national rankings by a WVIAC team since former league member Salem was ranked for an NCAA Division II record 76 consecutive weeks from 1997 to 2003.
The league-leading Hilltoppers, who are trying to become the first West Virginia Conference team in nearly four decades to win four consecutive WVIAC titles, are the conference's lone representative in this week's poll. Fairmont State was the second team listed under teams also receiving votes with 23 points but is unlikely to move up next week following Monday night's 70-65 home loss to Wheeling Jesuit.
West Liberty hits the road on Saturday for a crucial WVIAC tilt against third-place Alderson-Broaddus. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Rex Pyles Arena.
