DeFelice Heart-Shaped Pizzas Raise Money for Great Cause

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio -

For 29 years now, Dom DeFelice has been making heart shaped pizzas a Valentine's Day tradition across the Ohio Valley.

Over the course of three busy days, DeFelice Pizza raises thousands of dollars for the American Heart Association, a cause close to his heart.

"When I was a kid, they thought that I had a heart condition, known as IHSS. As I grew older, they said I may grow out of it, which I did. So that is what really prompted some interest in the American Heart Association and giving back," Dom said.

Over nearly three decades, DeFelice has gathered *thousands of special heart-shaped pans for this three-day event. It's the busiest time of year for the store, and they have the staff to prove it.

Dom laughs, "We don't bring in additional-- we bring in all the help. Nobody has that day off."

I got a behind the scenes look at how these special pizzas are created, and even had a hand in creating my own specialty. I called it the "Olive You" pizza.

DeFelice's special crust is layered with their signature sauce, and then baked once. Next comes fresh dairy cheese, followed by toppings. For the "Olive You" specialty, I used mushrooms and green and black olives.

A little more cheese tops the pizza before it heads to the oven, once again. Once it's baked to perfection, the heart-shaped pie is ready to be sliced, which is clearly not my forte.

Once it's in the box, topped with the "Barbie table" (at least, that's what I call it), it's off to you!

So if you forgot to make your Valentine's Day reservations, don't worry! Going out to eat on one of the busiest days of the year is over rated, so dial up your local DeFelice Brothers Pizza and help out a great cause!

One dollar from every pizza sale goes toward the American Heart Association, and you can buy a paper heart to place on the window of the store, as well.
