CHARLESTON, WV -

The West Virginia Ethics Commission announced Feb. 21 the selection of C. Joan Parker as its new executive director.

Parker, the commission's general counsel for the past four years, will succeed Theresa M. Kirk, who has been with the Ethics Commission for about nine years. Kirk's final day before returning to the private sector will be March 8.

The commission also named former Kanawha County Assistant Prosecutor Maryclaire Akers its new general counsel.

Parker's first day will be March 11. She is a Roane County native with a bachelor's degree from Davis and Elkins College. She obtained her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center, and she has argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

Parker worked with the Connecticut Commission on Human Rights for 13 years and has been an international consultant to Lawyers Without Borders throughout Africa and South America as well as the United Nations in Turkey.
