The Union Local Lady Jets are the first area team to send their entire squad to the district bowling tournament. It's a huge accomplishment considering the Lady Jets finished last in the sectional tournament just one year ago.
The outlook foe this season was not exactly optimistic either. Of the 12 bowlers on this year's squad only two had any bowling experience at all.
"I was worried at first but these girls really came through," said Union Local Bowling Coach Katie Fischerkeller. "They practiced about six days a week. And they are very dedicated bowlers. So I had no doubt at the end."
The entire student body gathered in the cafeteria for an enthusiastic send off. Each team member was recognized as they passed through a tunnel of students. The girls then loaded their equipment into vans and headed to Shawnee Lanes in Chillicothe. There they will compete against five other teams for a spot in next weeks State Tournament.
Seniors bowlers Casie Kyer and Megan Stull are thrilled with the show of support.
"I'm so excited. To be one of the first teams in the valley to make it this far and I am hoping that we make it even farther," Kyer said. "I have faith in my team."
"From last year having a really bad year to going 13-1, it's really an incredible feeling," said Stull. "It's really special and when people give up their time to congratulate us it's a real good feeling."
Fischerkeller, says it was the teams hard work and dedication that contributed to their success.
"They practice at least three hours a day a lot of them come on Saturdays and Sundays for one-on-one instruction. So it's dedication for them," she said.
Districts begin Feb. 22.
