FOLLANSBEE, W.Va. -

UPDATE:

Brooke County Authorities and Follansbee police are investigating why a man near Jefferson Elementary School in Follansbee, allegedly had an assault rifle with him near the school.

Brooke County  Superintendent Dr. Kathy Kidder and Follansbee Police Chief John Schwertfeger said Jefferson Elementary, Hooverson Heights and Follansbee Middle Schools were placed on lock down about 2 p.m. Friday when calls came in about a suspicious man on Allegheny Street.

Kidder said the lock down was lifted one half hour later at two schools. However, the focus remained on Jefferson Elementary. Schwertfeger said authorities made sure kids were safe by taking them to busses and cars when they left for the day.

Other officers at the same time were searching for Justin Charles Nixon, 37, of Wellsburg.

Schwertfeger said Nixon has been charged with public intoxication, obstructing an officer, brandishing a weapon and terroristic threats.

Authorities said he will be taken to the Northern Regional Jail Friday night.
