Coal barge runs aground in southwestern Pa.

Posted: Updated:

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard said Feb. 22 a coal barge was intentionally run aground in the Monongahela River in southwestern Pennsylvania to keep it from sinking.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported (http://bit.ly/YiHIaU ) that a towboat operated by Towline River Service in Elizabeth was pushing three loaded barges early Friday when the lead barge hit bottom and began taking on water.

The towboat pushed the barges to shore below Brownsville in Fayette County around 6:45 a.m.

The river was closed to commercial traffic all day while the coal was transferred to another barge.

No coal was spilled into the river.
