UPDATE:

Assistant District Engineer for the West Virginia Division of Highways, Dave Sada, said on Monday that the Wheeling Suspension Bridge will be closed for three to four weeks while the broken cable on the bridge is replaced.

UPDATE:

According to a spokesperson for the West Virginia Division of Highways, Brent Walker, it is a not a load bearing cable, but instead helps prevents the bridge from swaying. He says this is a diagonal cable attached to the stiffening truss, the high point of the structure.

As a precaution, the bridge is closed indefinitely to vehicles and pedestrians.

"It is important that we certainly close it," said Walker. "The bridge is not in danger of falling in, but  the cable is necessary to keep it from swaying."

Walker says on Monday inspectors will begin to formulate how they will begin the repair
