Raising Awareness for Lupus Science and Services in New York and the Nation
NEW YORK, March 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The S.L.E. Lupus Foundation put a face on lupus, with the unveiling of a 103-square foot display window yesterday at New York City's Rockefeller Plaza. Conveying the theme, "Be the Face of Hope, Be the Cure," the window draws attention to the often undiagnosed and dangerous autoimmune disease.
The six powerful portraits represent the diverse faces of lupus -- men, women and children of all ages, and particularly young women of color. The photo collection also depicts a common dilemma for people with lupus -- many do not look sick despite suffering with the disease.
"We designed the window to educate the general public about lupus so they know what lupus is and how it might impact people they know," said Margaret Dowd, S.L.E. Lupus Foundation and LRI executive director. "Also, a mirror is prominently positioned to urge passersby to reflect on their own health. We want to encourage anyone who feels tired much of the time or experiences joint pain to talk with their health professional."
Thousands walking through Rockefeller Plaza will have that opportunity as they pass the eye-catching larger-than-life size window at New York's famous landmark, home to NBC Studios. Often misdiagnosed and misunderstood, lupus is a destructive and potentially life-threatening autoimmune disease affecting more than 1.5 million Americans; nine out of 10 people with lupus are women. Lupus is a leading cause of kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and stroke among young women.
Up throughout the month of March, the space came to life with the creative vision of interior design major at the School of Visual Arts Stephanie Flores, who donated her time to help draw attention to lupus. For the fourth year, the nation's largest preventive health company EHE International donated the display window valued at $50,000 to $100,000 on the Plaza side of the building to help the S.L.E. Lupus Foundation raise awareness of lupus to improve diagnosis – and find a cure – for this difficult disease.
