Wheeling Central junior guard David Park made two free throws with :03 lifting the Maroon Knights over St. Marys 50-48 in the Class A Region 1 Co-Final at St.Marys.
Park finished the game with 21 points, as the Maroon Knights clinched an improbable berth in next week's state tournament in Charleston.
Freshman point guard Chase Harler added 12 points, and senior post player Brandon Wallace had 8 points. Junior guard Thomas Stanley came off the bench to score a pair of big buckets down the stretch, and assisted on the game-tying bucket by Wallace. Stanley also made a great defensive play, forcing a five second violation, with less than a minute left.
After winning just five games last season, and starting this season at 2-7, the Maroon Knights won the OVAC Class 2A championship this season, plus benefited from the new post-season rules.
And for their reward, they'll play Magnolia for the fourth time this season in the opening round of the state tournament. No.7 Wheeling Central (13-12) will take on the red-hot, No.2 Blue Eagles (21-4) next Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Charleston Civic Center. Magnolia has won 12 in a row, and all three meetings this season with Wheeling Central.
