The River High School boys basketball team claimed the Ohio Division IV District Championship with a hard-fought, 56-49 overtime win over the two-time, defending state champions from Hiland at Meadowbrook High School.
It's the third District Championship in school history (1988, 1989) for the Pilots, and first for head coach Mark Romick. Legendary coach R.L. Potts directed the first two.
River senior guard Brett Price, the D-4 Eastern District Player of the Year, scored 31 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, dished out five assists, and made five steals. He also made 16 of his 19 free throw attempts, including his final eight, and all six FTs in overtime. Price's biggest assist came on the lone field goal in overtime. He tracked down an inbounds pass in the backcourt-- some 80 feet from his bucket-- and sent a long pass down the floor to wide-open senior Cody Caldwell, who layed in two of his nine points. Senior post Jordan Indermuhle added seven points and yanked down 10 boards.
Hiland (21-6) was led by junior Todd Ropp with 22 points.
The Pilots, now 20-7 on the season, advance to the Division IV Regional Semifinal on Tuesday night in Canton, against Youngstown Christian.
