The No.7 Wheeling Central boys not only upset, but they blew out No.2 Magnolia in a wire-to-wire 58-35 victory in the first round of the 100th boys high school state tournament in Charleston.
Wheeling Central will advance to semifinal Friday to play No.3 Charleston Catholic at 9:30 a.m.
Wheeling Central junior David Park had a monster first half, canning all five of his 3-point attempts. He finished the game with a game-high 26 points and 12 rebounds. Senior post Brandon Wallace scored 16 points and grabbed 6 boards, and freshman point guard Chase Harler, the Knights' leading scorer, added 10 points.
Magnolia's Mark Winters, who finished his career as the school's all-time leading scorer, finished with 20 points, and heads to Wheeling Jesuit University with 2,056 career points.
Wheeling Central outrebounded Magnolia by 20, 38-18.
The first quarter was easily the worst of Magnolia's season, trailing by a score of 15-2 after one period.
