WV Senate passes voter registration list maintenance bill

Posted: Updated:

A bill that would update and clarify the state's process for maintaining voter registration lists and related records unanimously passed the Senate March 26.

Sen. Corey Palumbo, D-Kanawha, briefly explained the bill to lawmakers before the vote, saying it would eliminate outdated language in the current state code and would make several changes to help remove people who have died or moved away to be removed from voter rolls. It also would include updated language to include digital records and the statewide voter registration database as the main source of records.

The bill would clarify that canceled registration records would be maintained in the statewide voter registration database for at least five years after the cancellation, rather than the current three-year requirement.

The bill also would require each county commission clerk to "transmit or mail" the Secretary of State by Feb. 15 of the year the database is purged so all voters identified as no longer eligible to vote had been canceled.

The bill will now go to the House of Delegates for deliberation.
