Adventures on the Gorge finds new management

Posted: Updated:

Adventures on the Gorge in Ames Heights, Fayette County, recently saw a management change.

Paul Buechler, who had been CEO since 2008, recently stepped down. An interim management group of Michele Fowler and managing members Brian Campbell and Jeff Proctor was named to get through the 2013 vacation season, according to a news release from the company.

Campbell and Proctor have extensive experience as managers of The Rivermen and Class VI River Runners – two of the businesses that merged to create Adventures on the Gorge. Fowler has financial and accounting management experience and has five years as the companies' CFO under her belt. All other members of the Adventures on the Gorge senior management team will remain.

Proctor said the CEO search starts immediately.

"Paul will continue his leadership role as a member of the board and work with the interim management team through April 14 to ensure a smooth transition," he said in a news release. "The Board of Directors and Senior Management Team are grateful to Paul for the vision, business acumen and leadership that he brought to our organization over the past five years."

"We appreciate that Paul's hard work means our company is fiscally strong and well-positioned for growth in the outdoor recreation resort industry."

Adventures on the Gorge borders three miles of the New River Gorge National River with more than 1,000 acres for guests to rent cabins, vacation homes and campsites while they enjoy whitewater rafting on the New and Gauley rivers, zipping on the TreeTops Canopy Tour, kayaking, fishing, mountain biking, hiking, mountain climbing, disc golf and paintball along with dining at three restaurants.

The facility was named one of the Best Adventure Travel Companies on Earth in the 2009 National Geographic Adventure survey.
