A Marshall County couple's dog was attacked by a coyote Sunday night.
William and Irene Dove of Limestone say their nine-year-old collie-shepherd mix is now recovering at the vet's office, and is expected to be released soon.
They say their dog had become increasingly agitated in the past two weeks, and then they saw what they thought was a large tan dog in their yard.
Now they realize it was a coyote, and it bit a chunk out of their dog's back leg.
"Our dog Rudra had a big bite taken out of his leg," Dove said. "It was like four or five inches of skin had just been peeled back all the way around. It was like a classic takedown maneuver to cripple an animal so that he could be caught."
He says Rudra is expected to make a full recovery.
He says Rudra weighs 70 pounds, and was still vulnerable to a coyote attack.
He advises pet owners to keep their pets indoors, especially at night, and to keep a constant eye on them when they do go outdoors.
He says smaller dogs and cats are particularly vulnerable.
Dove says coyotes are more prevalent than they have been in the past.
