There's growing momentum and good news about the initiative to create a dog park in Wheeling.
Dog owners who want to be able to take man's best friend to a safe place where he can run and play with his fellow canines are about to get their wish.
In fact, it may happen within a few months.
It's been talked about for a long time.
But now, Jeremy Morris, a dog owner who is spearheading the project, says the dog park could open as early as this fall, or next spring at the latest.
City officials are still looking at an Elm Grove site near the skate park, the walking trail and the J. B. Chambers Ball Fields.
In the meantime, there are some things that supporters can do to help move the project along.
"Well they can come out to our next meeting which is going to be Thursday, April 11 at 6:30 at River City Restaurant," says Morris. "However, if the weather is nice, we're planning to meet out at Heritage Port where people can come and bring their dogs and we'll all sit together with our pups and talk about the next steps. And then we'll have a few fundraisers that are going to be announced."
Those fundraisers will involve several local restaurants holding outdoor events to be attended by humans and their dogs alike.
He says the Elm Grove site for the dog park would be ideal because there's plenty of parking, and while kids play ball or skate, parents can let the family dog get some exercise and socialization of his own.
