The annual lottery for shelters at Wheeling Park took place Saturday morning where families and organizations needing picnic shelters in 2014 could enter to book one.
Anyone who was interested had to pay a deposit to enter the lottery that will go towards the rental of the shelter.
Doors opened at 8 to all the eager people hoping to secure one of the shelters.
Wheeling Park has three shelters: Sonneborn, Schwertfeger, and Bandstand shelter, but for most, Schwertfeger was the one wanted the most.
"Well this is the first time I've ever been involved in anything like this. I didn't know anything about any lines. My buddy had told me I had to go fill out a paper because I didn't know anything about it. Then here I am really excited. I called my brothers and said 'hey! we got the shelter we really wanted'," says Charles Johnson of Bellaire.
Sonneborn Shelter is located in the hilltop area with an adjacent field perfect for team sports or organized games. The Bandstand Shelter is a unique round shaped shelter overlooking the Stifel Playground and the Good Lake. It has six picnic tables and seats 60 people. Schwertfeger Shelter is located across from the Stifel Playground as well and has plenty of seating for large family and company parties.
