Huntington deals with second sinkhole

Posted: Updated:

Huntington officials had a second sinkhole to deal with this week. This one was on one of the busiest streets in town.

Mayor Steve Williams said a sewer line collapsed on Monday evening on 8th Street between 5th and 6th Avenue, creating the sinkhole. The street is on one of the main routes from Interstate 64 to downtown, and it was on a street that was already partially blocked by ongoing renovation work to an office building that houses the Huntington District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Street department workers discovered the sinkhole at about 8:45 p.m. April 8, Williams said. The mayor said that section of 8th Street will remain closed until crews can make necessary repairs.

A few weeks ago, a larger sinkhole developed on a street leading to a bridge crossing the Guyandotte River into the Guyandotte neighborhood of the city. Repair work started soon after and is ongoing.
