Investigators have cleared the scene where human remains were found Sunday afternoon. Hikers came across the bones in an old abandoned farm house off of Stone and Shannon Road in Ohio County.
"What they will be looking for is any kind of clues at the scene, evidence of foul play, or just evidence of someone having a heart attack and dying in the woods," Ohio County Sheriff Pat Butler told 7News earlier Monday.
The remains have now been dispatched to the West Virginia state medical examiner's office in Charleston for further analysis. Sheriff Butler told 7News he and his deputies "wracked their brains" on Sunday in an effort to recall missing people, but couldn't immediately recall any that might match the remains.
A few people out for an afternoon hike Sunday came across an unexpected discovery- skeletal remains- along that path in Ohio County.
According to Ohio County Sheriff Pat Butler, an evidence response team has been on scene investigating since Sunday night. Not many details are being released until that investigation is complete.
