New WV budget heading to vote by Legislature

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, WV (AP) — The West Virginia Legislature is getting ready to finish a new state budget.

A House-Senate committee endorsed a proposed spending plan Tuesday, setting the stage for a Wednesday vote.

Funding sources include $4.1 billion from general tax revenues. That section is marked by the 7.5 percent cuts ordered by Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin for most agencies he oversees.

But lawmakers sought to soften the cuts for several programs, including those targeting domestic violence and sexual assault.

This draft also leaves it up to the state schools superintendent to reduce Department of Education staff spending. Recently signed legislation aimed at improving public schools requires a 5 percent cut.

Legislative leaders and Tomblin are also discussing a brief special session to revive proposals addressing magistrate pay and a Morgantown-area development project.
