POWHATAN POINT, Ohio -

The new Powhatan Elementary School's Cornerstone Ceremony and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony were held Saturday afternoon.

The Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio officiated the Cornerstone Ceremony. They blessed the building and the ceremonial cornerstone. Students were able to spread cement on the blessed cornerstone.

The Cornerstone Ceremony is an ancient tradition that's been popular in the United States since colonial days. The Powhatan Choir and Band performed the school's Alma Mater and fight song during the ceremony.

Everyone in attendance then moved outside for a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Many students told WTRF.com they are excited and appreciative of their new school.
