Maroon Knight Standout Signs With West Liberty

Colleen McCormick is the latest addition to the West Liberty University women's basketball program.

The leading scorer and rebounder on Wheeling Central's West Virginia Class A state tournament semifinalist, McCormick signed her official NCAA Division II letter of intent during a brief ceremony at the high school.
"We were extremely impressed by Colleen's work ethic," West Liberty head coach Lynn Ullom said. "She plays with a little bit of an edge and you can tell she loves to compete. Colleen had an excellent career at a program with a great winning tradition and is coming off a spectacular senior season. She will be a great addition to our program."
A four-year letterwinner who teamed with fellow Hilltopper recruit Emily Bucon to lead the Maroon Knights to four consecutive state tournament berths, the 5-10 McCormick finished her outstanding high school career with 1,358 points and 1,074 rebounds.
As a senior for veteran head coach Penn Kurtz this past season, the versatile forward ranked among the top scorers in the Ohio Valley with a 20.5 ppg. scoring average while also pulling down 13.6 rebounds and handing out 2.1 assists per night.
A talented low-post scorer, McCormick also demonstrated an impressive shooting touch from the perimeter. In her final high school season, the newest Hilltopper connected on nearly 56 percent of her shots from the floor – including an impressive 43 percent from behind the 3-point arc – and ranked among the valley leaders with an 85 percent showing from the charity stripe.
"Some kids just have a knack for putting the ball in the basket," Ullom said. "Colleen is a very capable scorer on the blocks but I don't think people realize how well she shoots the ball from distance. Her skill set is a really good fit with the way we like to play."
A three-time All-Valley and All-OVAC Class AA selection, McCormick was tabbed as second team captain on the West Virginia Class A all-state teams following her junior and senior seasons. She closed out her high school career earlier this month by scoring 14 points to help West Virginia rally to an 89-87 victory against Ohio in the OVAC All-Star Game.
Colleen is the daughter of Patrick and Carol McCormick of Wheeling.
