CHARLES TOWN (AP) — A World War II veteran from West Virginia who served as an agent behind enemy lines in Austria is being recognized for his service.

Sen. Jay Rockefeller presented 10 medals to Frederick Mayer, of Charles Town, on Saturday.

Mayer posed as a German officer in Austria. Despite being captured and tortured, Mayer helped negotiate the surrender of Innsbruck in 1945.

Among the awards that Rockefeller presented to Mayer were the Prisoner of War Medal, awarded for honorable service while being held in enemy hands, and the World War II Victory Medal.

Rockefeller's office says parts of Mayer's story are being told in a new film called "The Real Inglorious Bastards." It's scheduled to premiere at the 7th Annual GI Film Festival on Tuesday in Arlington, Va.
