St. Vincent DePaul School in Elm Grove was placed under a brief lockdown Monday afternoon after Wheeling police received reports of shots fired in the area. Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger has confirmed the shots came from the Stone Church Road area, but he stressed there was no threat. The Ohio County Sheriff's Department is currently searching for the source of the gunfire.
Wheeling Police arrived on the scene quickly after receiving the report and placed the school on lockdown, which lasted around 30 minutes. Bryan Minor, spokesman for the Wheeling-Charleston Diocese, said the incident showed how valuable the relationship is between the school and police.
The school returned to normal activities as of 3 p.m. Monday.
