The dean of West Virginia University's College of Business and Economics is getting a new job, but he's not leaving his current one.

Jose "Zito" Sartarelli has been named WVU's chief global officer, a new role that centralizes the responsibility for all international activities in teaching, research and service. Sartarelli will work closely with the chancellor of health sciences and with the vice presidents of student affairs and research. He also will be accountable to the university president for advancing the global engagement goal of WVU's 2020 Strategic Plan.

""This new position is really representative of the university-wide effort to redesign the structure WVU has in place for our international presence," Sartarelli said.

"The redesign will impact how we recruit and enroll international students, as well as structure exchange and study abroad opportunities for students. This effort will also change our structures—and our attitudes—about global research and economic development and how they go hand-in-hand."

Sartarelli, who holds dual Brazilian and U.S. citizenship, was able to study in America thanks the American Field Service program. He earned his bachelor's degree in Brazil before coming to Michigan State University on a Fulbright scholarship. Sartarelli earned both his MBA and Ph.D., from Michigan State.

He came to WVU in 2010 following a career in the pharmaceuticals industry.

Sartarelli's experiences make him uniquely qualified for the position. Global engagement recently was identified as one of the four pillars supporting WVU's commitment to economic development within West Virginia. The three other pillars are research, engagement and outreach and state relations.

As chief global officer, Sartarelli will work to connect and accelerate activities and will work with academic deans to promote college-level global opportunities.

"In moving to structure a high-performance global office, WVU is fortunate to have in our midst a proven leader who built his business career in the global marketplace," said Michele Wheatly, WVU provost. "He truly understands the importance of international partnering in economic and talent development, and in an academic context."

Sartarelli will assume his new duties July 1, while maintaining his role as dean of the college of business.
