Wheeling Jesuit University (WJU) announced that Rev. Gregory Boyle, S.J., will deliver the keynote address at the university's 55th commencement ceremony May 18.
Boyle is the founder and executive director of Homeboy Industries, best selling author of "Tattoos on the HEart: The Power of Boundless Compassion" and longtime advocate for the poor and needy. The university will present him with an honorary degree during the ceremony.
WJU president Richard Beyer said the university is honored to have Boyle on campus.
"We are honored to have Fr. Boyle address our graduating class as they prepare to go out into the world and become tomorrow's leaders," Beyer said. "He is a man who has dedicates his life to the service of others, and truly personifies the Jesuit mission."
Part of Boyle's mission is to reintegrate high-risk youth, former gang members and the recently incarcerated of Los Angeles, California back into society through a variety of free programs.
Wheeling Jesuit will also recognize Wheeling businessman Michael D. Ferns, Sr. during commencement with an honorary degree for his dedicated support of the University and Wheeling community.
Commencement is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. in the Alma Grace McDonough Center on campus.
