CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia is adding a commemorative coin to the celebratory mix ahead of its 150th birthday.

Online sales begin Monday for the limited edition silver round. It depicts the official sesquicentennial logo on one side and a detailed engraving of the state seal on the other.

The state has minted 1,863 of the coins, reflecting the year it gained statehood. They sell for $49.99 and can be found at www.wv150.com.

The Mountain State also issued a commemorative coin in 1963, when it turned 100. Those have become collector's items.

West Virginia split from Virginia during the Civil War. Activities commemorating the state's birth are scheduled throughout the spring. They lead up to a major celebration in Charleston that runs from June 20 through the June 23 anniversary of statehood.
