HUNTINGTON — Women are an increasingly important part of today's U.S. military. Responding to the growing number of women in uniform and the parallel increase in the ranks of female veterans, the Huntington VA Medical Center has opened a new Women's Health Clinic.

Located in a three-story, 7,200-square-foot building that previously housed the Medical Center's quartermaster operation, the new clinic was dedicated in a May 16 ceremony.

Women who have served in the armed forces are eligible for a variety of veterans benefits and the VA actively encourages women to access the benefits due them, said Nancy Bostar, manager of the center's Women Veterans Program.

According to center director Edward Seiler, the Huntington center has 1,200 female veterans enrolled for care. At the new clinic, they will have access to primary care and a broad range of services specifically tailored to the needs of female veterans. These include gynecology services, breast exams and mammography, reproductive health care and menopause treatment.

Mental health services, including treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, are also available, as is treatment for substance abuse. The clinic's staff includes a mental health social worker.

The new clinic, created at a cost of nearly $3 million, includes a reception and waiting area, examination rooms, a treatment room and space for physicians, as well as administrative offices. The clinic is adjacent to the Medical Center's main building, with its own dedicated parking area. A shuttle from the center's front door is also available.

Located at 1540 Spring Valley Drive, the Huntington VA Medical Center, often referred to as the "VA Hospital," opened in 1932. In the decades since, it has served the medical and health care needs of tens of thousands of veterans in the Tri-State area of West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky.

Women veterans seeking information on health care and VA benefits may call 304-429-6741, extension 3423.
