BUCKHANNON, WV (AP) — Construction of a West Virginia Army National Guard readiness center in Buckhannon is expected to be completed in August 2014, about three months ahead of schedule.

The $13.5 million center was scheduled to be completed in November 2014.

"We are pleased with the contractor. They have done two projects in the past with us. Those were of exceptional quality," Guard spokesman Col. David Shafer tells The Exponent Telegram. "The West Virginia Army National Guard is poised to complete additional projects on the site as soon as they are appropriated by Congress."

The contractor is Paramount Builders of St. Albans. Site work is being done by Pro Contracting, a subcontractor.

Maj. Gen. James Hoyer said the center will be the home of the 601st Engineer Co., the 1935th Contracting Team and the 229th Engineer Detachment.

The facility also will house a conference center managed by the Upshur County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

When completed, the Guard's old armory in Buckhannon will be turned over to the community.

"We look forward to continuing the tremendous relationship we enjoy between the community and the National Guard for years to come. We enjoy being a part of the community and are placed to be an economic catalyst for the area," Shafer said.
