Reduction of 106 workers at Alpha mine, 80 of whom will be offered other positions

Alpha Natural Resources is making another round of layoffs in the Southern West Virginia coalfields.

Samantha Davison, spokesperson for Alpha Natural Resources, acknowledged that there have been "some reductions" in Greenbrier and Nicholas counties. The announcement affects 106 employees, though about 80 will be offered other positions within Alpha.

Part of the announcement included that the White Buck Coal's Pocahontas mine would be idled. A section of the Grassy Creek Mine also will be shut down. Davison said the reductions are primarily due to an oversupply of metallurgical coal resulting in a price drop.

The company will reduce production by just over one million tons. The mines affected are spread across Nicholas, Greenbrier, Raleigh and Boone counties.
