The United Steelworkers' Women of Steel recently donated $5,000 to Reconnecting McDowell, granting the opportunity for many McDowell kids to attend a weeklong 4-H summer camp.

This year's summer camp's theme is "Green Brick Road," which focuses on courage, heart, head and home, said a news release from Reconnecting McDowell.

Karen Shipley and Heather Anderson, Women of Steel leaders in West Virginia, said this donation will allow at least 50 McDowell County kids, who otherwise could not have participated, to have the chance to attend.

Kids will learn new skills like archery, cooking and photography at this year's camp, the news release states.

Older campers will discuss drug abuse, relationships, money management and planning for their futures.

Kids also will have the opportunity to attend healthy lifestyles classes and STEM courses (science, technology, engineering and math), the news release continues.

The West Virginia University Extension Service runs the camp, which has a day program for children ages 5-12 and a residential program for youth ages 9-18.
