The Madonna of the Trail statue along National Road in Wheeling has been re-dedicated.
The Daughters of the American Revolution, along with the Wheeling National Heritage Area Corporation, worked to get $30,000 in grants to clean, repair and refinish the ten-foot, ten-ton statue. It is one of only 12 of its kind in the nation, all placed along the National Road in 1929.
The statue has emerged from her facelift in great shape. The
85-year-old statue represents the struggle of women who crossed the
nation with their families in pioneer times. The woman in the statue,
wearing heavy boots on her feet and a bonnet on her head, has two
children and a rifle with her.
