Local Boy Gets Diabetes Alert Dog

Posted: Updated:

In Ohio County, a local family welcomed a new friend that is trained to save their son's life.

Ben Gilmore is 6 years old and was diagnosed with diabetes at 13 months of age. A steak fry was held in July to raise money for Ben to get the alert dog.

The dog, named Doc, is a certified ADA service dog that started training at only 6 weeks to detect and let people know about a spike or drop in a diabetic's blood sugar level. Trainer Philip Farris said they bring the dogs in at an early age as part of the process and training.

Without Doc, the family had to check Ben's sugar levels every couple hours, even at night; but now, Doc can wake Ben if his levels go too high or low.
