ANMOORE, WV (AP) — The town of Anmoore in Harrison County owes an estimated $250,000 in unpaid taxes, and some council members believe an upcoming audit also will reveal credit card misuse.

Town council members revealed Monday that they learned in July of the unpaid taxes, insurance and penalties owed to the federal and state governments, media outlets reported Tuesday. They expect to receive a final report by the fall.

Some members said they suspect credit card misuse, and the body approved a motion to discontinue their use. The state audit is expected to look into employees' credit card use.

Anmoore Mayor Eddie Hardman said he doesn't think anything suspicious is going on.

"I don't feel there is any kind of wrong doing," he said. "It was just a matter of filing the taxes incorrectly."

An audit from 2008 to 2012 showed 22 violations, including 10 internal tax liens and 12 non-compliance issues. One of the violations included the repeated transferring of money between departments without revising the budget.

Council members have requested financial documents from town finance manager and police chief Chris Magee, who is stepping down in September.

"It's already been a month and we have not done anything to tackle this problem," new council member Heather Gillespie said. "It's indisputable. We owe this money. There's no point in waiting three, six, nine months to start tackling this."

Council members said they'd hire an accounting firm to look into the problem.

"As a council person it's my job to represent the town and I don't feel that I can do that without knowing where our money is," Gillespie said. "I think right now our main concern and our biggest priority is to get our finances in order so that we can do things that we need to do."
