MORGANTOWN, WV -

Sharon L. Martin has been chosen to lead the Division of University Relations at West Virginia University.

The selection of Martin, now assistant vice president of marketing at Purdue University, came after a national search. She will join the university's senior leadership team in early October.

At WVU, Martin will oversee brand research, strategy and management; print, video, photography and digital and social media outreach; content development and creative design; executive communications; internal communications; media relations and news operations; crisis communications; and innovation in technology and emerging media.

She also is charged with providing leadership for campus marketing communication professionals and will work closely with alumni, donors and other constituencies.

Prior to her position as Purdue's assistant vice president, Martin served as director of brand and advertising and as assistant director of segment marketing at the school.

Before that, she owned her own boutique marketing and communication agency, Full Moon Communications, and founded a women's magazine, "Helen," that focused on relevant women's issues and promoted community awareness.

Earlier in her career, she served as director of communications and editor of the magazine at the Purdue Alumni Association.

She earned her bachelor's degree at Central Michigan University, where she majored in journalism with an advertising minor.

She has earned a number of CASE and ADDY awards for integrated marketing and communication initiatives and serves on several community and professional associations, including National Mortar Board, Association of Women in Communications and the American Cancer Society.

Martin takes over the position formerly held by Christine Martin, who left in January to become president of the Poynter Foundation.

Sharon Martin was one of five finalists for the position. Greenwood/Asher & Associates aided WVU in the search. University Relations Associate Vice President Tricia Petty and Assistant Vice President Becky Lofstead have led the division since Christine Martin's departure.
