The Point Pleasant River Museum is bringing something new to its stretch of the river.

The Museum will host the first-ever Dragon Boat Festival Sept. 28 at Krodel Park Lake in Point Pleasant.

The festival's main event is shaping up to be the Dragon Boat Races, with teams of 22 paddling up and down the lake racing to be the fastest. Local businesses, organizations and community groups are welcome to enter.

The museum also is looking for boat sponsors and team members, but has indicated it can work with teams of any size as well as individuals to help fill ever boat.

Each team will be provided with its 40-foot-long Dragon Boat, which is really a canoe, paddles and life preservers and 10 team members will paddle on each side with a drummer in front to keep the rhythm. The 22nd member will be a trained pilot to help steer the boat and try to keep it in the lead. Breakfast, entertainment and games also will be provided as well as inflatable games for children and RiverWorks Discovery Exhibits.

Themes are encouraged for team attire, and the boats will be available for teams to practice starting Sept. 24.
