Despite the recent hot weather, areas like Belmont County have a history of flooding when downpours occur. But now, with the help of a National Emergency Grant, Belmont County has been actively cleaning up creek beds in hopes of preventing future flooding in the area.
Program Supervisor Rich Vannelle says work is still being done to complete the project which started in 2011. Vannelle says the tough part is most of the debris has to be removed by hand which obviously takes more time. The Belmont County Commission has keeping a close eye on the progress because they know how destructive floods have been in the past.
The grant-funded program will hopefully be complete at the end of the year. According to Vannelle, the program has received a few renewals and doesn't believe another will be needed.
The current clean-up is taking place in the Captina creek area.
