Wheeling Jesuit Students Hold Vigil for Classmate Kevin Figaniak

Posted: Updated:

The mood was somber and quiet, but also lighthearted, as Wheeling Jesuit classmates and teammates gathered on the lawn in front of Donahue Hall to celebrate Kevin Figaniak's life.

Director of campus ministry Jamie brogan said the vigil was organized by the students who didn't want to mourn the loss, but celebrate his life by prayer, playing music he enjoyed listening to, and sharing stories and memories.

Brogan added that as soon as the news came of Figaniak's passing, the students asked to have the vigil. Brogan said, "They wanted to do something to celebrate his life, not so much to focus on the mourning now, just to do something fun. Kevin was a fun guy."

Students put candles in the sand that formed the number 16, his lacrosse number. Two members of the lacrosse team and one of his hockey teammates read a few passages and shared memories they had of Figaniak. The mood on campus since the incident has been very solemn but after the vigil tonight, the campus is looking to move forward.
