The Wheeling Police Department took a junior high student into custody on Friday after learning he had a firearm in his locker at Wheeling Middle School.
Sergeant John Schultz was notified by other students and parents early on Friday morning that a 12-year-old student had reportedly brought a gun to school. Schultz and school staff quickly located the student and the firearm. The student was not in possession of the weapon at the time of the investigation, and officials say no one in the school was in any immediate danger.
Wheeling Police say that within five minutes of the tip, the student and the firearm were located.
The student is being charged with possession of a firearm at a school. Because of the child's age, no further details will be released.
