Weirton Madonna made a big statement, not only in the Ohio Valley, but in the state of West Virginia, as the Blue Dons spanked the Wheeling Central Maroon Knights 42-7 at Jimmy Carey Stadium on Saturday night.
Blue Dons senior quarterback Ross Comis ran for 112 yards on 24 carries, and scored four touchdowns--all before halftime. He also threw a touchdown in the second half. Senior running back Elliott Nero carried the ball 18 times for 132 yards and scored a two-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Wheeling Central was pressured all night, and turned the ball over five times. They also had several key injuries, the most significant was senior running back C.J. Burch, who injured his elbow and did not return. Senior lineman Jimmy Tankovitz and sophomore linebacker Jeff Gywnn were also injured and did not return for the second half.
The Blue Dons improve to 3-0 on the season heading into the bye week. They host Cameron (1-2) on Friday, September 27 at Carey Stadium.
Wheeling Central (2-1) suffers its first loss of the season, and be home next Saturday night to play cross-city-rival Linsly (2-1).
