EQT Corp. and Green Field Energy Services say they have successfully completed a hydraulic fracturing operation in the Marcellus Shale region powered entirely by gas provided by a nearby well.

The fracturing was conducted on a well in Pennsylvania.

"We are excited to be one of the first to utilize a technology that allows us to power our equipment from one of our producing natural gas wells," Steve Schlotterbeck, president of EQT Exploration and Production, said in a news release. "We're continually exploring ways to minimize impact to the environment by making our operations cleaner, greener, and more efficient. By eliminating diesel and using 100 percent field gas, we're able to reduce emissions of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and sulfur oxides as well as decrease the amount of truck traffic on local roads."

Rick Fontova, president of Green Field Energy Services, said, "Our Turbine Frac Pump technology is unique in that it is capable of running on 100 percent natural gas, where others require the use of diesel. In addition, our proprietary Turbine Frac Pumps meet all of the current EPA Tier IV level emissions standards."

In 2012, EQT launched a pilot program to begin converting drilling rigs to natural gas. It has commissioned four to date. The first rig operates on liquefied natural gas (LNG), while the remaining three are powered by natural gas produced on site.
