West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Cabinet Secretary Karen L. Bowling announced Sept. 19 she appointed Dr. Letitia E. Tierney as Commissioner of the Bureau for Public Health and State Health Officer.
Tierney's appointment is effective Nov. 1.
"Dr. Tierney's unique background in medicine and law will effectively serve the West Virginia Bureau for Public Health," Bowling said in a news release. "I am confident her proven leadership and wealth of experience make her the right fit for this position."
Tierney has served as a hospitalist physician and associate quality director at Charleston Area Medical Center since 2010. Prior to that, she served as an internal medicine and pediatrics resident, where she was chief resident.
"I'm honored to join the hard working team at the Department of Health and Human Resources," Tierney said in a news release. "It's an exciting opportunity to work with Secretary Bowling at a time when the field of medicine is facing great challenges and change."
Tierney, a Charleston resident, will replace Dr. Marian Swinker, who stepped down Aug. 29, 2013.
