It was the last thing residents in Marshall and Monroe Counties expected to hear, but just after 1 a.m. on Saturday an explosion rang out.
In seconds flames were spotted shooting from the Dominion Gas Plant.
In a short time the scene was locked down as emergency units went to work determining what areas of the plant were affected.
Nearby residents in the Kent area were also evacuated as a safety precaution.
Luckily no injuries were reported.
"The fire is under control, but at this time we're just letting it burn out," added Dominion Spokesman Jim Norvelle.
As a result of the on-going fire, officials with the Marshall County Emergency Management Agency made the decision to keep Route 2 below Moundsville closed.
The cause of the fire and explosion remain under investigation and officials hope to have more answers once the fire dies down.
Around 2 a.m. residents were given the ok to return to their homes.
