The West Virginia Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training reported a fatal accident occurred at the CONSOL Energy McElroy Mine in Marshall County on Friday.
The accident took place at approximately 12:49 p.m. Preliminary information indicates the miner suffered a head injury while underground and passed away en route to the hospital.
Inspectors are at the mine and have started their investigation.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin released a statement this afternoon regarding the fatal accident: "It is a terrible tragedy when the dangers that can accompany mining result in the loss of life," Tomblin said. "This miner and his family remain in the prayers and thoughts of Joanne and I, just as they surely do with all West Virginians."
After a temporary closure, the mine will reopen on Saturday.
