Local Church Holds Canned Food Drive for Soup Kitchen

This weekend one local church wanted people in the Ohio Valley to see what they CAN do for the less fortunate.

Manger Baptist Church in Warwood held a canned food drive and block party with all proceeds going to the Greater Wheeling Soup Kitchen.

More than one hundred people showed up Saturday and the community gathered again Sunday after a morning service at Warwood Garden Park.

Reverend Jerome Anderson saw the block party and food drive as a chance for the young church to make an impact in the community.

"There are just so many people that are out of work now that are hungry," said Reverend Anderson. "Even in our schools, children don't have food for the weekends so anything we can do to help out anyone in need is just really important. If we all just get together as a community we can really make an impact."

Anderson also said the food drive helped promote the young church, he and his family started Manger Baptist Church last April in a pizza shop and are now located in the old Warwood High School.
