Former Wheeling delegate, WV Racing Commission chairman Harry Buch has died

Harry Buch, a former member of the House of Delegates from Wheeling and former West Virginia Racing Commission chairman, has died at the age of 83.

Buch died Oct. 12, according to his obituary from Kepner Funeral Homes. He was born Aug. 31, 1930 to the late Harry F. Buch and Marcella Sonnefeld Buch, who owned the former Buch & Donovan drugstore in Wheeling.

Buch graduated from Wheeling Central Catholic High School in 1948 then the University of Notre Dame in 1952 and its College of Law from 1955. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1956-1958 and practiced law with the firms Gompers Buch McCarthy & McClure, Bailey Riley Buch & Harmon and also Steptoe & Johnson. Buch was given the "Fellow of the WV Bar Foundation" award in 2011.

Buch, a Republican, was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates in 1958, and was chairman of the Racing Commission from 1969-1978 and again from 1984-1989. He also was president of the Association of Racing Commissioners International from 1988-1989.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patricia Griffith Buch, along with six children and 17 grandchildren.
