Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel Visited Martins Ferry For Brief Economic Forum

Posted: Updated:

Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel visited Martins Ferry, holding a public forum at the City's Recreation Center.

Everyone from citizens to city officials gathered for the brief discussion that was called an economic summit.

People asked questions about everything from the future of coal to the role of gas and oil drillers in the community.

One woman said it wasn't fair that the pipeliners are living and working in our community, but not paying taxes like the long-time residents are.

Here is Mandel's answer to that.

"Well, I think one of the goals should be to ensure that there's as many Ohio men and women working in the oil and gas fields as possible," he noted. "I'd rather have these gas and oil jobs go to Ohioans than folks from Texas and Oklahoma and Colorado or other states. And I also think it's important, you know, for the folks that are coming to Ohio from other states, that they're following all the rules and living within the bounds of Ohio law."

Mandel was also asked how the state and the governor might help save Ormet from closure.

He said his office has nothing to do with that.

He called the Ormet situation "unfortunate."

Mandel ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate last year, and was defeated by Senator Sherrod Brown.
