For the first time in 13 tries, the Wheeling Park High School football team has knocked off Steubenville Big Red, as the Patriots stormed out to a 35-0 lead, en rout to a 44-22 victory at Wheeling Island Stadium.
The loss was a first for Big Red against a team from West Virginia in 50 years (Weir High 1963), and first loss against an OVAC opponent since 2002 (East Liverpool 6-0).
Wheeling Park sophomore running back Savion Johnson carried the ball 20 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught two passes, which went for touchdowns. Senior quarterback Zach Phillips completed 10-of-14 passes for 154 yards and a pair of scores.
The loss, a third straight for the Red (5-4), all but eliminated them from playoff contention.
Wheeling Park, now 7-1, will host Parkersburg South next Friday at Wheeling Island Stadium.
