The Wheeling Police Department and the Ohio County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition teamed up for a prescription drug take back Saturday at the Elm Grove Pharmacy.

Residents could drive up and drop off any unused or expired pharmaceuticals and over the counter medications.

West Virginia has the highest rate of overdose deaths in the nation so the service is set up to help combat this dangerous problem.

"The drug problem fuels a lot of the other crime we have to deal with so this is just a unique way that we can combat those crimes," said Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger.

A drug take back also took place Saturday throughout Ohio, residents could drop off their unused or expired drugs at Riesbeck's throughout Belmont County.
