Weirton Madonna won the battle of the unbeatens in a hard-fought 22-17 win over Steubenville Central at Jimmy Carey Stadium in Weirton.
Madonna senior quarterback Ross Comis scored a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns, the final one coming with 30 left to give the Blue Dons the lead for good. Comis, who played with an injured left shoulder, ran the ball 25 times for 110 yards. Senior running back Elliott Nero also carried the rock 25 times, but had 125 yards and a touchdown.
The Crusaders led 17-8 at half, but failed to score the in the second half. Senior quarterback Brenton Colabella threw for 189 yards and a touchdown, but was also intercepted twice by Will Bowser in the end zone.
The winning drive hinged on a 4th and 11 conversion, when Comis scrambled all over the field before throwing a hail mary complete to Marcello Biondillo at the one-yard line. Comis scored one play later to give his team the lead for good.
The Blue Dons, now 8-0 on the season are on the road for the final two regular season games at Toronto and Clay-Battelle.
The Crusaders (8-1), losing for the first time this season, host Magnolia to wrap up the regular-season next Saturday night.
