Black Bears Struck on West Virginia Turnpike

Posted: Updated:

PAX, W.Va. (AP) - At least two black bears have been struck by vehicles on the West Virginia Turnpike near Pax this week.

The Register-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1bIAaEC) Kristin Canterbury of Beckley narrowly avoided a large bear that barreled onto the highway Monday night. She says the bear hit the car behind her and continued running across the turnpike.

On Thursday morning, former Register-Herald editor Butch Antolini spotted a dead bear in the same area. He estimated that the bear was around 100 pounds and said it appeared to have been struck earlier that morning.

Colin Carpenter, black bear project leader for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, said it's not clear why so many bears are crossing the turnpike in the Pax area but it probably has something to do with topography.
